Practice Schedule

Golf Team,

We will practice Wednesday (3/31/10) No practice on Thursday due to the JR/Sr Prom. Over Easter Break all of you need to make an effort to get yourselves on your home course whereever you belong and get your game in top shape.

We play Monday April 12 at St. Davids, the day we return from spring break and then again on Thursday April 15 at CCS. We then play Monday April 19 at RMA. So you can see for us to have a good chance at the states we need to be ready to play our best on the 7 days after Easter Break.

We have already qualified for the first match vs St.Davids. We will qualify for CCS probably on Tuesday and Qualify for RMA on Thursday. Everyday will be filled with important golf. I hope to get something worked out about the match we missed at least by the week of the 12th.

Get your A game in shape. It is going to be a fun and important ride. Remember, the top 3 from the last match automatically qualify for the next match. The 4th best score if 85 or less will also get bye from qualifying for the next match. The other two spots (or three) will be decided by qualifying.

PS- if I remember correctly we went to Triangle Town Center Food Court for lunch before playing at North Ridge (St. Davids). We will go to Cary Town Center food court before CCS and of course IHOP before RMA. I will have to leave RMA immediately after the match due to a School Board Meeting the same night.

New Dismissal Time for Monday and other info!

Hi Team,

1- We will leave school Monday at 10:00am. Mr. Wiggs O.K.ed it.

2- Team shirt, khaki pants or shorts. Make sure you have your clubs and your shoes. Be certain to read the post on team rules.

3- Playing order RMA: Luke, Clay, Matthew, Steve, Ryan, Holden.

4- We will eat at IHOP for breakfast. We will either go to the Food Court or KW Cafeteria for Dinner after the match. Bring money.

5- I have discussed the missed match with Mr. Wiggs and with Coach Pollard the head of golf for our conference. Mr. Wiggs will discuss it with Coach Herman Monday. No one knows where the break in communication occured. The coaches will meet Monday and discuss what to do.

6- Mr. Wiggs says if we do not make it up we could keep the 4-22 date we were supposed to go to KVA and use it for a Golf Day for the team.

7- KVA won the first match by 5 over APA. St. Davids shot 323 or so, CCA shot 335 or so and RMA shot 345. KVA and APA will no doubt be 2 or the top 4 teams in the state this year from what I understand. Maybe even 1 and 2.

Team Rules and other things to know.

Team Rules:

1- No throwing clubs or other acts of poor sportsmanship. Penalty is suspension of a minimum of one match.

2- Proper attire is Team Shirt, Khaki pants or shorts, Golf Shoes. Shirt tail must be tucked in at all times for men's shirt anytime we are at the golf course or in public. No caps worn backwards, we expect you to look and act like good representatives of Halifax Academy at all times.

3- Act respectfully to all coaches and representatives of the hosting golf course. Yes Sir is a key word.

4- Make sure you count your score correctly. Two complaints from other coaches and you will have to sit out the next match. Also count your opponents score properly. Every stroke counts until we get to 5 over par on any given golf hole.

5- Take care of the golf course. Rake the traps after use and repair your ball marks on greens.

6- You must have golf shoes and be properly dressed to play in a golf match.

7- Never forget you are representing Halifax Academy, yourself, your teammates, your parents, and me your coach with your actions. We not only expect good behavior but we required it. We are the face of Halifax Academy, many parents judge our school by the golf teams actions since it is the only sport with face to face interaction.

8- Before leaving the course, as a team we go in and thank the Golf Professional for letting us play their course. It is very expensive to host a high school golf event. If you have the opportunity, please thank the Host Coach on your own for hosting a nice event.

9- Practice Rule: Anyone missing practice without notifying me at least by 2:00pm the day of practice will not be allowed to play in the next match. It is each players responsibility to be at practice or to have a good reason why you are not there. This is the Volleyball Rule used by Ms. Tickle. Everyone's time is important and it is a common courtesy to let the coach know if you are not going to be here to practice. 586-4066 Pro Shop, 308-2863 Cell.

Things you might need to know.

1- Make sure you have all your clubs and shoes etc. and get to the car as quickly as possible after dismissal time. We do not have time to waste.

2- We usually eat out twice once before the match and usually after the match. Bring enough money to take care of yourself.

3- It is each players responsibility to make sure they have a ride to and from each match. Players are not allowed to drive.

4- Each player will keep his own score and the score of one other player in his group. You must add each nine holes and total 18 before you turn your card in at the scorer's table to a coach. You must also sign your card.

5- If you do not know what rule to follow you need announce your intentions and then play two balls the original and the provisional and get a ruling at your first opportunity from a coach as to which ball should be counted as your score.

6- Who plays and playing positions on the team is simply the coach's call. The 3 low scores from the last match will automatically qualify. the 4th low score will qualify if it is 85 or below. The rest will qualify for the other spots weekly. In case of a tie it is the coaches option. If someone who qualified for a match cannot play it is the coach's call on who plays.

7- Matches are 6 players playing two 9 hole matches and taking the 4 best scores from each team for each 9. In general in the 320's will get you to the states most years. Around 300 most of the time gives you a great chance to win the state championship. The top 8 teams in the state get to play for the 2A State Championship in Golf. Last season Parrott Academy won the State Championship.

8- Last season we had 4 of the top 8 teams in the state come from the EPIC conference. Chris Freeman made All State.

I will add additional thoughts as I think of them, so check back to this blog for updates.

2010 Golf Schedule and Departure Times

Hi Team,

I think we have the makings of a pretty good Golf Team for this year. I am looking forward to seeing how much we can improve before the first match. As of right now this is our schedule. I will try to set up another home match with someone to get us a chance to post another good score if it can be worked out.

Golf Schedule 2010

Thursday 3/35/10 @ KVA 1:00 Tee Time (We were not notified of the change from 4/22/10

Monday 4/12/10 @ St. Davids 1:00 Tee Time 9:35 Departure

Thursday 4/15/10 @CCS 1:00 Tee Time 9:35 Departure

Monday 4/19/10 @RMA 1:00 Tee Time 10:00 Departure

Monday 4/26/10 @H.A. 1:00 Tee Time 10:30 Departure

Monday 5/03/10 @APA 1:00 Tee Time 8:40 Departure

High School Golf in the NCISHAA is based on qualifying for the 8 man season ending tournament and whoever wins that as a team over 36 holes is the Champion for 2A Golf. The medalist individually is also recognized and I think the top 8 low scores for the 2 day tournament make up the All State Team.

Individuals can qualify for the state championship on their own without the team making it. I think the rules on this might change a little this year but basically you need to shoot under 80 in every match. Last year we got to throw out the 2 worse 9 hole team scores and individual scores. I am waiting for this years rules to tp be fowarded to me from Coach Herman.

As far as matches go we play 6 players and take the 4 best scores. We play it as two different 9 hole matches for our team index but as a 18 hole score as far as the conference standings go. This is because some of the other conferences only play 9 hole matches. We count the best four scores. Low score wins. Our team index is created from our scores and turn into the Golf Chairman for 2A golf.

After the first match the 3 low scores will automatically qualify for the next match. The 4 score if 85 or less will also qualify. We will qualify for the remaining 2 or 3 spots as the case may be. Playing order is a coaches decision. I reserve the right to change this procedure as I think will better our teams chances.

We will provide for each player a Team Bag to use and take care of for the season. This should be returned at the end of our golf season for storage. You are responsible for this bag being returned in good condition. We will give to each player a Team Shirt and 3 Titleist golf balls for every golf match.

You will need to furnish your clubs, shoes, transportation, travel money for meals, and either Khaki pants or Khaki shorts to be worn with the team shirt. Team Hoodies are available but you will have to pay for them. They were about $20.00 last year. You will also be expected to do your part in our fundraiser golf tournament that we hold to pay for all the nice things that golf requires a team to have. This usually means you or your parents working the day of the tournament and selling Tee Sign add's for hole sponsors at all the tee's.

I have already sold one add for $1000.00 to Vernon Bradley who liked the job I did with the JV Girls teams the past several years and volunteered to be our major sponsor. BTW, It costs us over $3000.00 per year to have this team so we still have some work to do, plus we like to sponsor the year end teachers luncheon and when we have good fundraising we work on other school projects like the fence around the school.

First Practice Feb. 22, 2010

Hi Team,

We had a short practice due to the coach having to attend a school board meeting at 6:30.

Present were:

Luke

Matthew

Clay

Steve

Holden

Kimberly

Ryan

Ray

Missing due to swimming was JW.

It was fun to get out and get started. With the bad weather this winter keeping everyone off the golf course there was a lot of rust. I think the potential is there for a good team though. It should be a fun year.

Tuesday we will have another short practice since I have to attend an Athletic Council Meeting. Practice will end again at 5:00pm. We will try to practice until 5:30(9 holes) or so after that when possible Monday thru Thursday.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday are your personal days but I hope you will go to your home course and play lots of golf. That is how you get better. We will become more involved with teaching golf after everyone settle's in and our swings limber up a bit.

Good Practice,

Bland
